A unified interference/collision model for optimal MAC transmission power in ad hoc networks

چکیده
In this paper we address the issue of controlling transmission power in power-aware adhoc networks. We argue that minimum transmission power is not always optimal. Previous work that minimizes the transmission power does not consider both the energy consumed in collision resolution and the energy disbursed to overcome the interference resulting from neighboring nodes. We investigate the basic transmission power control for the 802.11 MAC protocol, in which the control frames and the data frames can be transmitted at different power levels. A unified collision and interference model of a uniformly distributed network is constructed. Based on this model, the end-to-end network throughput and the total energy consumption of the network are examined for different network parameters. For a network with a given node density, our results show the optimal transmission power for control messages and for data messages that will yield maximum throughput and minimum energy consumption per message.

Power Adjustment Algorithm for Higher Throughput in Mobile Ad hoc Networks
In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs), power control is necessary in order to reduce power consumption rates, avoid collisions within packets, increase spatial throughput of the system and to reduce contention among flows. The MANET nodes which are outside the transmission range are energy constraint and they consume more power for packet transmission. In this paper, we propose to develop a power ...
متن کاملPower Aware Range-based MAC Protocol for Scalable Mobile Ad hoc Networks
In mobile ad hoc networks, collision problem which is caused by the expansion of the interference range of the receiver node due to the controlled transmission power of the sender node is uniquely a tarnished problem. This paper employs physical and virtual carrier-sensing schemes to avoid the collision problem. We analyze the relationships among the transmission range, the carrier-sensing rang...
متن کاملThe Optimal MAC Layer for Low Power UWB Networks is With Independent Channels and No Power Control
We are interested in the design of a MAC layer for systems that use ultra-wide band (UWB) communication and transmit very little power. We first explore the design space and find, that, for such networks, the optimal MAC should allow concurrent transmissions on as many channels as there are destinations; this is in sharp contrast to the established way of designing MAC protocols. Further, power...
متن کاملTransmission Power Control for Enhancing the Performance of Wireless Packet Data Networks by Jeffrey
This thesis presents several techniques that enhance the performance of wireless mobile devices that communicate without depending on a supporting infrastructure. These networks are commonly referred to as ad hoc networks since they operate in highly dynamic environments and, therefore, must utilize available resources. The primary focus of this thesis is on improving the performance of ad hoc ...
متن کاملLocation based transmission using a neighbour aware with optimized EIFS MAC for ad hoc networks
In a typical Ad Hoc network, participating nodes have scarce shared bandwidth and limited battery life resources, so resource optimization and enhancing the overall network performance are the primary aims to maintain functionality. This paper proposes a new cross layer Medium Access Control (MAC) algorithm called Location Based Transmission using a Neighbour Aware with optimized Extended Inter...
